The Editor (Grimoire)
Write, format, and organise the manuscript tree.
What it's for
Le Grimoire is the central writing space. It brings together on a single screen the text surface, the manuscript tree (the Codex), and an intelligent context panel (the Oracle).
Here you can write, organise parts, chapters, and scenes, format your text, activate writing aids (spell checker, thesaurus, stylistic highlighting), and track your progress via timed sprints. Everything is saved automatically.
Step-by-step guide
Navigate the Codex
1
The Codex (left column) displays the full manuscript tree.
2
Click a scene to activate it; click a folder (part or chapter) to expand or collapse it.
3
Use the search field at the top of the Codex to filter the list in real time.
4
Click the chevron in the header to collapse the Codex and gain space; a second click reopens it.
Write and save
1
By default, the editor is in Manuscript mode: all chapters scroll in a single document. Navigating in the Codex scrolls to the chapter (brief golden highlight).
2
To work scene by scene, switch to Scene mode via the button in the status bar.
Auto-save triggers 2 s after the last keystroke. A version history is created every 5 minutes per scene.
Format text
1
Select text then use Bold (
Ctrl+B), Italic (Ctrl+I), Underline (Ctrl+U), or Inline code.2
Click Format ▾ for the level (Paragraph, Heading 1-3), font (20+ families), size (10-32 pt), colour (24 + custom), and alignment.
3
The Lists button offers bullets (disc, circle, square, arrow, dash, diamond, tick) and numbering (numbers, roman, alphabetical).
Create an item in the Codex
1
Right-click an existing item → Create section → Part, Chapter, or Scene, then enter the title.
2
Slash commands: at the beginning of a line, type
/ then /chapter, /scene, /part, /interlude, or /note. The node appears in the Codex ~2 s later.Rename, move, delete
1
Double-click a title to edit it inline (Enter confirms, Escape cancels). Or right-click → Rename.
2
Drag and drop a node to reorder it; a ghost preview shows the target, and auto-scroll activates near the edges.
3
Right-click → Delete moves to the Trash (bottom of the Codex). Restore, permanently delete, or empty the trash via right-click.
Customise a node
1
Right-click → Change icon, Change label (text + colour), or Change status.
2
Quick statuses at the bottom of the menu: To write, In progress, Done. Metadata appears on the Codex row.
Merge and split scenes
1
Merge with next: concatenates two consecutive scenes.
2
Split in two: cuts the scene at the midpoint.
3
Split at selection (right-click in the editor): cuts precisely at the cursor.
Writing aids
Writing aids work on the document language (independent of the interface). If no language is set, a selector opens on first activation.
1
Stylistic highlighting (Palette button): adverbs (purple), repetitions (amber), passive voice (blue dashes), weak words (pink underline), long sentences (grey line). The chevron fine-tunes the categories.
2
Spell checker (crossed pencil): misspelled words underlined in red; right-click to Replace, Add to dictionary, or Ignore.
3
Thesaurus: right-click a word → Synonyms; click a synonym to replace (capitalisation preserved).
Sprints, Focus, history
1
Sprint (Stopwatch): duration 5-60 min (25 = Pomodoro) + word goal; draggable badge with time, words, and speed; pause available.
2
Focus mode (
F11): hides the Codex, Oracle, and bars; floating controls (theme, ambience, sprint, words, exit). Escape to leave.3
History (clock): list of automatic versions; preview then Restore.
Timeline, notes, and attachments
1
Calendar+: creates a pre-filled timeline event with the scene and selected text.
2
Floating notes (side panel): create, move, resize, link to scenes/characters, pin.
3
Attachments: right-click → Add an attachment…, or the Paperclip panel to upload and link.
Tips
◆
Typewriter mode: the cursor stays vertically centred while typing.
◆
Breathing mode: side panels fade while typing and return after a few seconds.
◆
Hover over a node for 2 s for a tooltip (title, status, words, label, synopsis).
◆
Right-click → Change type toggles between Part/Chapter/Scene; Repair types recalculates the hierarchy.
◆
The Sun/Moon icon toggles the editor's light/dark background, independently of the global theme.
◆
Structure changes made in the Corkboard or Timeline are automatically reflected here.
◆
Expired subscription: an amber banner appears; reading is possible but changes are not saved.
